Reynisfjara on Iceland's south coast

Iceland's South Coast

Private day tour, 8-10 hours, all year.

Proceed east from Reykjavik along the southern slopes of Eyjafjallajokull volcano, where you'll take in some of Iceland's most dramatic scenery -- on one side, tall mountains with a succession of waterfalls cascading from the glaciers above, while on the other, views of the North Atlantic coastline with its black sand beaches and dramatic headlands.

After a scenic drive through Iceland's premier farmland, we come to Seljalandsfoss, a narrow waterfall dropping 60m (200ft) into a shallow pool with space to walk behind it. From here, another short drive brings you to the tiny village of Skogar, home to one of Iceland's finest folk museums; its old turf farmhouse provides a glimpse into the fishing and farming culture of past centuries. We'll also stop at the town's breathtaking Skogafoss waterfall, which drops nearly 60m into the river Skogaa. According to legend, the river hides a gold treasure trove visible when the sun hits it the right way.

Continuing eastward, a 15-minute drive brings us to run-off glacier Solheimajokull, where we'll take a few steps onto the ice using crampons and other glacier-gear. After stopping for refreshments in the quaint town of Vik, Iceland's most southerly village, we'll explore its beautiful black sand beaches before returning to Reykjavik by dinnertime.

Depart Reykjavik at 8:30 AM and return by evening.
